Movie And A Beer Episode 137: Damsel
On this episode of Movie And A Beer we're brought into a fantasy realm of kingdoms, dragons, and sacrifice staring Millie Bobby Brown in Damsel. It really tries to turn the tropes and typical fantasy movie on it's head while still doing the typical things you find in a fantasy story. We found the aspects of this film interesting in how one might interpret who's actually the 'damsel' in it.
Along the way we also had a couple of interesting locally produced beers to sip. A soft IPA from Kings and Daughters Brewing (OR), and a Mexican lager from Gigantic Brewing (OR). While both had their merits, one really stood out. Not just from the can art and story behind the beer, but also the flavor and approach. Give the episode a listen to learn more about them both.

Movie And A Beer Episode 136: The Blues Brothers
Tuesday Apr 09, 2024
Tuesday Apr 09, 2024
On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we go on a mission from God, one that lands Jake and Elwood behind bars, but only after saving the orphanage. The Blues Brothers is an iconic music comedy film from the early 1980's that lends itself to more of an SNL sketch than full length film, but somehow it pulls off some movie magic and has become a part of our music and comedy culture.
Along for the ride we had a couple of great beers, a black lager from Moonlight Brewing (CA), and a really wonderful NE style IPA from Fortside Brewing (WA) that perhaps holds the namesake of the movie. Listen in as we discuss the in's-and-out's of movie magic, storytelling, and how beer and music can make your movie experience an even greater one!

Movie And A Beer Episode 135: Mad Max Fury Road
Tuesday Mar 26, 2024
Tuesday Mar 26, 2024
On this car chasing Aussie accented episode of Movie And A Beer, we enjoyed Mad Max: Fury Road and a couple of amazing beers along the way. This is more of a soft reboot than a prequel or continuation of the Mad Max franchise. With amazing actors, action, and a compelling story, the movie brings us along for an amazing ride through the post-apocalyptic landscape of the Australian outback.
We were lucky and picked a couple of great beers based on both can artwork and the relationship to the film. The first was a milk-stout from Left Hand Brewing (CO) and it's not hard to figure out why we picked that, considering the main character is missing their left hand, and then a west coast style IPA from Grains of Wrath (WA) Brewing that lent itself to the intensity of the film. Give the episode a listen to hear more about these great beers and this thrill ride of a movie.

Movie And A Beer Episode 134: Fargo
Tuesday Mar 12, 2024
Tuesday Mar 12, 2024
On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we explore the vast emptiness that is winter in North Dakota in the late 1980's in Fargo. Directed by Joel Coen, the story is quite simple and the outcomes were not terribly shocking, but the acting and visuals make this film a must see and classic tale that brought a spotlight to the Minnesotan culture and sensibilities.
We were lucky to have a couple of beers from Drekker Brewing that's based out of Fargo ND in honor of the films namesake. They are distributed out here on the west coast so you should be able to find them at some bottle shops and taprooms around Portland. They are known for their fruit smoothies and strong IPAs, both of which we had for the film.

Movie And A Beer Episode 133: Groundhog Day
Tuesday Feb 27, 2024
Tuesday Feb 27, 2024
On this day Movie And A Beer watched a film that takes place in1993, where a cynical weatherman named Phil relives his life over and over and over in Groundhog Day, and while we enjoyed this comedic film staring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell, we found that even if he relives his life a 1000 times, he just doesn't seem to get it right.
There were a couple of beers that we brought along for this journey through time, a British Pale from Away Days Brewing (OR) and the other, an IPA from Breakside Brewing (OR). While one was pleasant, the other reminded us of the film as it tries to do the same thing over and over, yet slightly different each time, and yet still doesn't seem to quite get it right. Give the episode a listen to hear why.

Movie And A Beer Episode 132: True Romance
Tuesday Feb 13, 2024
Tuesday Feb 13, 2024
On this hero's journey episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss a wonderful action/romance movie from the 1990's titled True Romance. Directed by Tony Scott with the screenplay by Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary, this film boils down to a simple approach: if life you want to live isn't within reach, you do crazy things to make it happen. True Romance stars Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette as our hero's on a quest to find a better life.
This action packed film calls for a beer(s) that don't distract, but provide some solid flavors to lend to the excitement on the screen. We picked out a big 18 pack that was on sale at the grocery store from Widmer Brothers Brewing (OR) and had a couple of them. Listen in to hear how these two went or didn't go with the film.

Movie And A Beer Episode 131: The Fifth Element
Tuesday Jan 30, 2024
Tuesday Jan 30, 2024
On this sci-fi driven episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched a classic from 1997, The Fifth Element, staring Bruce Willis as Korben Dallas, a taxi drive destined to save the universe if he can convince Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to fall in love. They combine forces with Father Vito Cornelius (Ian Holm) and zany broadcaster Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker) to defeat Zorg (Gary Oldman) and the evil he follows.
The beers we had with this were a plenty as the five elements, Culmination Black IPA (air), Ninkasi IPA (earth), Great Notion Rice Lager (Water), Coldfire IPA (fire), and Hetty Alice/Upright BIPA (Collaboration) (love). Give this episode a listen to hear about each of these beers, if they did or didn't go with it, and what we might recommend.

Movie And A Beer Episode 130: Escape from New York
Tuesday Jan 16, 2024
Tuesday Jan 16, 2024
Early 1980's sci-fi films were the best for bringing the audience into a dystopian future, on this episode of Movie And A Beer we enjoyed such a classic from John Carpenter, Escape from New York. Staring Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, a former Special Forces soldier turned criminal, he's recruited to retrieve the president in exchange for his own freedom (or have his head blown off in less than 24hrs).
With such amazing action, we just had to pick a couple of strong flavored IPA's to sip along the way. The first was a West Coast style IPA from Grains of Wrath (WA), and the second was a Double Dry Hopped IPA from Fast Fashion Brewing out of Seattle (WA). As a bonus, we discussed hops in length during the episode.

Movie And A Beer Episode 129: The Party
Wednesday Jan 03, 2024
Wednesday Jan 03, 2024
On this flashback episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched The Party, a 1968 film staring Peter Sellers as Hrundi V. Bakshi, an Indian actor who's been invited to attend a party that he shouldn't be at. While this is a comedy that covers topics such as cultural appropriation and the casting couch, it does provide the actors with a chance to demonstrate their site-gag and physical ability to perform funny stunts.
The beers we enjoyed with this film were both 'elephant' related as there is one of those in the film, and both beers had one on their labels. A peanut porter from Wild Ride Brewing (OR), and a dark Belgian ale from Brouwerij Huyghe. Both were exceptional in their flavors, just as this film was exceptional in it's humor.

Movie And A Beer Episode 128: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Tuesday Dec 19, 2023
Tuesday Dec 19, 2023
On this travel driven episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched and laughed at Planes, Trains and Automobiles, a John Hughes film from 1987. If you've had the opportunity to travel during the holidays, this film is for you. It follows Neal played by Steve Martin as he tries to make it from NYC to Chicago the day before Thanksgiving and is inexplicitly thrown together with Del Griffith played by John Candy as they make their way across the US in Planes, Trains, Automobiles, the back of food transportation trucks, and a few other random taxi's along the way.
As you can imagine, the comedy is quick and witty. We decided to go with a couple of locally produced beers that would go along for the ride. The first was a wonderful wheat beer from Pelican Brewing (OR) and the second was a pilsner from Von Ebert Brewing (OR). Both provided us with some much needed thirst quenching, but one stood out more than the other. Give the episode a listen to hear why.

Movie And A Beer Episode 127: Whiplash
Wednesday Dec 06, 2023
Wednesday Dec 06, 2023
Regardless if you're a student, musician, fan of music, or just a casual listener, Whiplash provides a unique insight into the world of elite musicians and what they do to achieve greatness. Miles Teller plays Andrew, an ambitious young jazz drummer who's teacher Terence Fletcher, played by academy award winner J.K. Simmons give you an ear full on it comes to keeping on tempo.
We decided to have just one beer with this film, well there was a second that Blake had, but most of us just stuck to the simple lager from 10 Barrel (OR) so not to distract from the action on the screen and in our ears.

Movie And A Beer Episode 126: Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Tuesday Nov 21, 2023
Tuesday Nov 21, 2023
The shag-a-delic 60's are afoot on this flashback episode of Movie And A Beer with Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Mike Myers brings us center stage with both lead acting roles, first as Austin Powers *(secret agent), and Dr. Evil, who's tries and fails at taking over the Earth. This great spooftastic film provides a laugh and cringe with over-the-top potty humor and some much needed insights into the misogynistic attitudes of men in the 60's.
We were lucky enough to enjoy a couple of British beers while watching the film. First was an ale from Boddingtons and the second was Brown from Samuel Smith Old Brewery. Both were really excellent Baby! Listen in to hear why and a whole bit on giving your beer (a) proper head.

Movie And A Beer Episode 125: The Dark Knight
Tuesday Nov 07, 2023
Tuesday Nov 07, 2023
This time around on Movie And A Beer we watch and discuss the Christopher Nolan's second of his trilogy about the DC superhero Batman titled The Dark Knight. This film is chalked full of action, suspense, drama, and the occasional bit of dialogue that makes sense. We gave homage to the film by consuming 3 different styled beers based on name and can labels while traversing the complexities that is Batman (Christian Bale) vs. the Joker (Heath Ledger).
Give this great (and longest to date) episode a listen to hear about the beers from Paperback (CA), Alesmith (CA), Pelican (OR) Brewing. Each had a distinct approach as does this film in telling the story of how the Joker creates Two-Face and reeks chaos on Gotham and those closest to Batman.

Movie And A Beer Episode 124: The Silence of the Lambs
Tuesday Oct 31, 2023
Tuesday Oct 31, 2023
On this special Halloween edition of Movie And A Beer, we watched the classic 1990's horror/suspense movie The Silence of the Lambs. There's a LOT to unpack in this murder mystery which stars Sr. Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector and Jodie Foster as an FBI agent in training Clarice Starling. The dynamic between them lights up the screen and we take a deep dive into that.
We enjoyed a couple of really heavy dark beers for this episode from Bombastic Brewing (ID) and Silver City Brewing (WA). Both went incredibly well with the movie and we discuss a bit about why and how you might want to pour your dark beer if you have one to sip with this amazing movie experience.

Movie And A Beer Episode 123: The Big Lebowski
Tuesday Oct 24, 2023
Tuesday Oct 24, 2023
On this episode of Movie And A Beer we explore "Dude-ism" and the art of kidnapping through the comic sensibilities of the Cohen brothers in The Big Lebowski. Based on real people and real events, an unbelievable turn of events leads Jeff Bridge's character down a path of violence with his bowling buddies Donny and Walter, played by John Goodman and Steve Buscemi.
The beers we had with this cult classic were reminiscent of the film's title and vibes, a hazy IPA from Baerlic Brewing and a stout from Block 15. Both were good in their own ways, but one stood out way more than the other. Give the episode a listen to hear why.

Movie And A Beer Episode 122: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Tuesday Oct 10, 2023
Tuesday Oct 10, 2023
On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss how your memories are a fickle thing, they make up who and what you are, so don't be like Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and go erasing them. Regret is all that follows. This now cult-favorite film from 2004 was directed by Michel Gondry with a screenplay by Charlie Kaufman, it was coined as an "indy film with a big budget".
We had a couple of sour beers in the fridge and both went really well with the film. A kettle sour from Little Beast Brewing (OR), and a fruited sour from Ecliptic Brewing (OR). Give the episode a listen to hear which was the better of the two.

Movie And A Beer Episode 121: Smokey and the Bandit
Wednesday Sep 20, 2023
Wednesday Sep 20, 2023
There are few films that impact trucker culture like this one did back in the 70's. Smokey and the Bandit helped solidify the film careers of Sally Fields and Bert Reynolds as the lead actors. We were lucky enough to have a CB-dictionary while watching and looked up some of the great lingo used in the movie. Who would have thought that a truck-load of Coors would cause such a commotion.
We sampled a couple of beers that had 'travel' related names and can art from Via Brewing (OR) and Matchless Brewing (WA). Both went pretty well, one better than the other.

Movie And A Beer Episode 120: Back To The Future
Tuesday Sep 05, 2023
Tuesday Sep 05, 2023
It's time for us to sit back and enjoy the crazy antics of time traveling back to the 1950's while getting hit on by your mom when she was a teenager. Not fun for some, more crazy to others. That's the premise on this episode of Movie And A Beer with the classic 1985 film, Back To The Future. Listen in as we discuss the finer points of skateboarding and alternate realities with our youth correspondent Otto.
The adults in the room did have the chance to enjoy a couple of lighter beers with this most classic of movies from Leinenkugel's (WI) and Ferment Brewing (OR). Give the episode a listen to hear which went better, and what snacks might be best to enjoy with it.

Movie And A Beer Episode 119: Spice World
Tuesday Aug 22, 2023
Tuesday Aug 22, 2023
On this really SPICY episode of Movie And A Beer we watched Spice World, the late 1990's extended music video/film that features the Spice Girls music group. Based in London England, Spice World follows the girls as they prepare for their debut music performance at the Royal Albert Hall. While it's shallow and dumb, it's also funny and sincere and holds up over the years. Girl Power!
The beers we had during the film were both a success like the Spice Girls, as well as a failure, like the movie. One was really good, the other really heat struck and horrible. They were from Old Town Brewing (OR), and Woodland Empire Ale Craft (ID). Give the episode a listen and learn why you shouldn't buy cheap beer off the shelf.

Movie And A Beer Episode 118: Taxidermia
Tuesday Aug 08, 2023
Tuesday Aug 08, 2023
On this challenging episode of Movie And A Beer, we watched, and experienced Taxidermia, the 2006 Hungarian surrealist comedy-drama horror film directed and co-written by György Pálfi. This will challenge you, you have been warned. It follows three generations of men from the same family and how they fit into and deal with life in Hungary from WW2 to current day. We didn't know what to expect, and boy, this was one hell of a trip.
The beers we got were purchased at Johns Marketplace in SE Portland and they included a Radler and a Vienna Lager. One was pretty decent and matched the vibe, while the other was a little thin. Listen in to learn which is which.
