Movie And A Beer Episode 48: Gremlins
Wednesday Apr 28, 2021
Wednesday Apr 28, 2021
On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we enjoyed a blast from the past and watched the 1984 classic children's horror film, Gremlins. While you may remember Gizmo as a cute and cuddly Mogwai, his offspring are anything but. Listen in as we discuss the finer points of how not to feed, clean, and kill your pet Gremlins once they start multiplying.
We really liked a couple of beers we had while watching Gizmo and his brothers destroy the small town of Kingston Falls (the set to Back to the Future). The first was a lager from Matchless Brewing and the second was a more solid pale ale from Rogue Brewing. Listen in on how and why these beers made our evening more pleasant.

Movie And A Beer Episode 47: Ted Lasso Pt. 2
Friday Apr 16, 2021
Friday Apr 16, 2021
Part 2 of Movie And A Beer's discussion on Ted Lasso, a wonderful TV show about an American football coach who goes to London to coach a Premier League Football Club. We cover the second part of season 1 and discuss how great Jason Sudeikis' mustache is and how much we enjoyed the character development.
The beers we enjoyed during the recap were a Pilsner from Wayfinder Brewing and a West Coast IPA from Little Beast Brewing. Both of these were purchased at the most excellent Bridgeport Beerhouse here in North Portland, check them out and support your local stores! Give the episode a listen to hear our reviews of the beers and what you might enjoy while binging Ted Lasso.

Movie And A Beer Episode 46: Ted Lasso Pt.1
Tuesday Apr 13, 2021
Tuesday Apr 13, 2021
On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the first few episodes of the hit TV show Ted Lasso. The show stars Jason Sudeikis as the titular Ted Lasso, an American college football coach hired to take over the AFC Richmond (fake) English Soccer club. The series is 10 episodes long and we decided to break up the podcast into two parts as there's just so much to cover and we wanted to do it justices.
We were lucky enough to find a couple of Fullers English beers to enjoy during one of the binges and we discuss why we feel this beer matches up so well with a show about soccer and coaching. Our thanks go out to local bottle shop 1856 for having these hard-to-find beers in stock!

Movie And A Beer Episode 45: Caddyshack
Tuesday Mar 16, 2021
Tuesday Mar 16, 2021
On this funny episode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the classic comedy Caddyshack and a couple of Leichtbiers (or lighter beers) we had while laughing along with this great film. We enjoyed the amazing actors telling the story of Danny Noonan, a struggling golf caddy at the Bushwood Country Club as he tries to raise money for his college education.
The beers were selected based on their low ABV and can designs. The first beer from Lowercase Brewing could easily be confused with a Diet Tab as it's a close rendition to it. While the second one from Chapman Crafted Beer is more standard in the design but has a summery vibe. Listen in on why we picked these lagers and how they went with the film.

Movie And A Beer Episode 44: Judas and the Black Messiah
Saturday Mar 13, 2021
Saturday Mar 13, 2021
On this new episode of Movie And A Beer, we're discussing the historical drama Judas and the Black Messiah that follows William O'Neal, a small time crook who makes a deal with the FBI to infiltrate the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party to gather intelligence activist and leader Fred Hampton. The film is long, amazing, eye-opening, unafraid, and unabashed in showing how the FBI and police were in the 1960s.
We had a couple of stouts from Lupulin Brewing and Pono Brewing to go along with this great film and one matched up a little better than the other did. Ultimately you should find something you will enjoy and not distract you from this intense movie experience. Listen to the episode to learn more.

Movie And A Beer Episode 43: Raya and the Last Dragon
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
Wednesday Mar 10, 2021
On this episode of Movie And A Beer we watched the recent Disney film, Raya and the Last Dragon, with our youth correspondent, Otto. He had a chance to try some really yummy sodas while we got to sip on a few beers. The film follows a young woman's journey to save her people and the last dragon. It really does a great job in representing the importance of trust and why we must learn to trust and respect each other or risk the consequences of our less humane ways.
The two beers from Hopworks and Anderson Valley Brewing provided some great liquid support for the movie, however, we all agreed that just one of them won the day. Otto's sodas were on point also. Give the episode a listen to learn about the film and the refreshments we had.

Movie And A Beer Episode 42: Primer
Tuesday Mar 02, 2021
Tuesday Mar 02, 2021
On this timey-wimey episode of Movie And A Beer, we talk about this crazy time travel over-engineered film from 2004, Primer. It's a story about a couple of friends that stumbled upon the link between gravity and time by accident during one of their garage experiments, and how they abuse the ability to travel back in time to try and fix what's broke. We drank a couple of experimental IPA's during the film which went pretty well considering that they were experiments and didn't take us back in time.
The two experimental IPA's were both pretty good and lent to the viewing experience through exploring what IPA 'can' be. The first was a collaboration from Ecliptic and Wayfinder Brewing and the second was a sour IPA from Evil Twin Brewing. Give the episode a listen to learn more about them, and how broken your brain can get while trying to figure out time travel.

Movie And A Beer Episode 41: Space Sweepers
Saturday Feb 27, 2021
Saturday Feb 27, 2021
On this episode of Movie And A Beer we discuss the recently released Korean Netflix film, Space Sweepers which takes you on an amazing journey into low Earth orbit to save a young child from the evil grips of corporate greed. We explored a couple of beer and Soju pairings that really provided a great backdrop to the film.
Soju is a traditional Korean alcoholic drink (lighter vodka-like) that can be traditionally made with rice or other fermentable grains or fruits and can have fruit or herbal adjuncts added. We paired up the standard and apple, pineapple, and herbal Soju with beers from Anders Valley, ForeLand Beer, and Level Brewing. Listen in to hear all about it!

Movie And A Beer Episode 40: James Bond - Moonraker
Tuesday Feb 09, 2021
Tuesday Feb 09, 2021
On this episode of Movie And A Beer, we were joined by our youth correspondent Otto while to watch the classic 1979 James Bond film Moonraker starring Roger Moore. It takes the spy to some fantastic locations and then into the Earth's orbit towards the end of the movie. We picked a couple of local(ish) beers that have connections to space (by name alone) and Otto tried some strangely colored sodas.
This was a fun episode as Otto got to share his thoughts on a variety of Jones Soda flavors (Orange, Cream Soda, Strawberry, and Watermellon) and we were pleased by the two IPA's from Ecliptic Brewing and Hop Valley Brewing. Give it a listen to learn more!

Movie And A Beer Episode 39: The Castle of Fu Manchu
Wednesday Jan 27, 2021
Wednesday Jan 27, 2021
On this episode of Movie And A Beer we discuss the 1969 film The Castle of Fu Manchu which stars Christopher Lee as an evil master-mind trying to take over the world. We also had a couple of easy sipping beers along with this amazingly bad film.
While we tried our best to make it through this film without feeling totally gross regarding the amount of exploitation and racism that it has, the IPA we had from Loowit Brewing and Pilsner from Wolf Tree Brewing truly helped us along.

Movie And A Beer Episode 38: Uncorked
Thursday Jan 21, 2021
Thursday Jan 21, 2021
On this episode of Movie And A Beer we review the Netflix film UNCORKED, then discuss the wide range of beers we had while viewing and note their differences. Uncorked follows a young man's journey to becoming a master sommelier while balancing his family's expectations to take over their BBQ joint in Memphis TN.
We enjoyed a range of beer styles, doing tastings with our friends while we watched to include 3 different fruited sour red Flanders beers (Block15, Brasserie d'Achouffe, and Brouwerij Verhaeghe Vichte), a NE IPA (Matchless), and a couple of stouts (The Brewing Projek, Gigantic). Listen in to find out what made the cut!

Movie And A Beer Episode 37: Soul
Tuesday Jan 05, 2021
Tuesday Jan 05, 2021
On this episode of Movie And A Beer we watched the fantastic Pixar film Soul with our special youth correspondent, Otto. We enjoyed a blind taste test between a couple of soda pop rivals and then three amazing fruited sour beers. The film follows a music teacher who has a chance to play in a jazz band and learns that he needs to look at his life and perhaps find what his passion is beyond his desires.
The three fruited sours we tried were 'out of the fridge' and from a wide range of breweries to include Untitled Art Brewing, Lumberbeard Brewing, and Eagle Park Brewing. Give a listen to hear why these sour beers worked so well with this animated classic.

Movie And A Beer Episode 36: The Shawshank Redemption
Saturday Jan 02, 2021
Saturday Jan 02, 2021
On this episode of Movie And A Beer we discuss The Shawshank Redemption, a gritty jail film that follows the lives of inmates in Shawshank Prison from the 40's-60's and two great collaboration beers we enjoyed with it. We wanted to bring in the new year with a film that inspires and brings hope to the lives of those less fortunate and this film hits it on the nose.
The collaboration beers were an IPA from Level Brewing/Old Town Brewing and an ESB Fortside Brewing/Beer Nerds. Listen to the episode to hear why these great beers went with the film and which characters we think would enjoy them the most.

Movie And A Beer Episode 35: The Mandalorian
Friday Dec 18, 2020
Friday Dec 18, 2020
On this special Mini-sode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the Mandalorian TV show season 2, episode 1 and a fabulous porter we sipped while watching. We enjoyed this introduction of the next season with a true western approach in the storytelling and direction. Just remember, you don't always have to eat the worm, sometimes you can blow it up!
The wonderful porter we had while watching the Mandalorian was brewed by Silver Moon Brewing out of Bend OR. This really nice fruited porter held our attention and helped bring to life the exciting scenes on the TV. Listen to the episode for further details and why it went so well with this episode.

Movie And A Beer Episode 34: Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
Thursday Dec 17, 2020
On this epic pre-election evening, Movie And A Beer reviews Borat Subsequent Moviefilm which provided both the social commentary and a welcome distraction from the craziness we're living through. Oh, and we also had two solid beers while viewing the Moviefilm. If you're not familiar with Borat as a character, this would be a good time to watch some of the trailers for it before going in blind.
The two beers were a full bodied Scottish ale from Founders Brewing out of Detroit MI, and the other was a Caramel Porter from Cascade Lakes Brewing out of Redmond OR. Both went well with the film, but honestly we should have done shots of a clear liquor instead. Listen in to hear why these went with the film otherwise.

Movie And A Beer Episode 33: Pumpkinhead
Wednesday Dec 16, 2020
Wednesday Dec 16, 2020
On this Halloween themed episode of Movie And A Beer, we embrace Pumpkinhead, a somewhat predictable horror film from the 80's and imbibe a couple of pumpkin beers that seemed to go with the film. While there were some pretty famous actors involved with this film, and it hits all of the horror tropes that exist, it still is dated and not the best thing to watch for Halloween.
Whereas the two pumpkin beers we sampled, one from Elysian Brewing from Seattle, and the other from New Belgium Brewing in Colorado, both had a solid body, characters that matched the movies, and were something we'd revisit, unlike this film. Take a listen to the episode to hear about these great beers and why they went with this movie.

Movie And A Beer Episode 32: Save Yourselves!
Tuesday Dec 15, 2020
Tuesday Dec 15, 2020
On this COVID-sode of Movie And A Beer we discuss the recently released film Save Yourselves!, a sort of sci-fi millennial rom-com that fell really flat, along with a couple of strange beers that didn't work as well as they should have. While we enjoyed the premise of the story, the acting was just ok and the overall execution of the film lacked any drive or reason to watch. We sort of felt sorry for the actors.
The beers, this time around were good, but not flavors that really go with this type of film. They both traveled a long way to get to Portland to destroy our taste-buds, as the film's best part, the cute aliens, traveled a long way to Earth to consume all ethanol alcohol. So, listen to the episode for a review of the fruited pale ale from Temescal Brewing in Oakland CA along with a fruited IPA by The Brewing Projekt in Eau Claire, WI.

Movie And A Beer Episode 31: Bill & Ted Face The Music
Monday Dec 14, 2020
Monday Dec 14, 2020
On this COVIDsode of Movie And A Beer, we discuss the recent 'bogus' film, Bill & Ted Face The Music and a couple of really good beers that we enjoyed with it. As you may expect, Bill and Ted are in trouble once again, but this time they have to write the song to unite the universe, and not just get past a high school history lesson. The music is 'excellent', the story is 'quaint', the acting is decent, the beers we had were 'Whooah!'
We would have to say that this pairing was one of the better ones of recent history. We tried a wonderful kettle sour from Rubens Brewing up in Seattle, and a great solid IPA from Firestone Walker in California. Listen to the episode for the details and why we really liked these beers!

Movie And A Beer Episode 30: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Monday Oct 26, 2020
Monday Oct 26, 2020
On this Movie And A Beer covid-sode we explored the world of animated Marvel films with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse while crashing the universes of beers and ciders by mixing them along the way. This was one of the most amazing recent animated films we've all seen in ages, it's definitely one not to miss with excellent visuals, writing, voice acting, and Nic Cage playing Spidy-Noir, aka, Humphrey Bogart!
The beer and cider mixes were all experiments that ended up being pleasant surprises. Ciders were from Finn River and Portland Cider companies, the beers mixed with them were from Ecliptic, Single Hill, and Deschutes Brewing. Listen in for what and how we mixed them during the watch party.

Movie And A Beer Episode 29: Real Steel
Saturday Oct 10, 2020
Saturday Oct 10, 2020
In this episode of Movie And A Beer we enjoyed the fantasy robot boxing film Real Steel. This film stars a washed-up former boxer played by Wolverine (actually Hugh Jackman) and his son, young Anakin Skywalker (actually Dakota Goyo). Filled with cheesy music and tons of green screen/computer action, you'll enjoy feeling good about this father/son story involving non-stop violence.
The two fruit beers we tried while viewing the film were from Black Raven Brewing Company (WA) and Mother Earth Brewing (ID). Both were excellent and went well with the film. No clear winner by knockout or points.
